Hornet Flight

It has been a long, hard month, but I have Hornet Flight done and another book that will hopefully be finished shortly.

Hornet Flight is another book that my husband and I have read together. It took us a really long time to read because we have going through a lot of stuff and added a new fur child to our family. Once we started picking it up again within a couple weeks ago, we got back on a good rhythm.

My husband’s quick response to it was that it started slow, but picked up halfway through. It became very predictable, and he did not understand the added love interest, but he gets why it was added. He thought that Peter’s storyline with his wife Inge was very drawn out, and did not like how Peter was made into a whiny child bent on revenge. He was hoping for more espionage, but overall he liked the story.

I enjoyed Hornet Flight; it was a good plot in a historical period that I always come back to. It talks about a different part of WWII that is not set directly in Germany. Our main character is Harold, who gets involved in a spy operation that could save thousands of lives. He is inventive to the increasing demands that the Nazis continue to impose on the compliant Danish people. I enjoyed the cast of characters; they made the story more complex, that there was more to people’s ideals and beliefs than the Nazi/non-Nazi viewpoints.

It was hard to read Peter’s storyline. Follett did a great job creating a character that you want to hate, but feel more pity than anything. The position he was in where events in life have hardened him, and the fact that Tilde realized this quickly and responded the way she did was commendable. She truly cared for him, and seeing how steep a downward spiral he went on as the case progressed only made her a somewhat better person.

I do not think I would read it again, though. I think this was a one-and-done for me. I do have more of Follett’s books and look forward to reading other works of his.
