I just finished The Doomsday Key and, surprisingly, it was not that bad.
The Doomsday Key is more of an action storyline where a government spy group is to figure out what the link is between murders that have been popping up around the world that have strikingly similar features and why it is happening. The main character is sent to Italy where quickly a group is formed with a couple of women from his past, both positive and negative. From Italy, they go to England where they begin digging into Celtic and Druid history; whereas another team goes to Norway where the CEO of a bioengineering company is tied to the other murders based off of their experimental GMO fields.
Personally, I have never been one who liked action movies all that much because there is not a whole lot of story going on, it seems like it is always just fan service, hence why I never got into the Marvel movies until way later on. I had tried similar books where there is a government agent and he has to save mankind and it did not really do it for me. This was a good one because it is more history based, which is a plus for me because I am kind of a history junkie. So there is your middle ground right there.
At the same time, it was still pretty cliche to me in terms of being an action genre, delving just information and detail about the characters to move you to the next scene with no backstory, having waves of slow build up then the big action moments where someone’s head gets blown off by a grenade launcher, the strong male lead with a semi-strong female baddie, the guy who barely participates, and the ex-girlfriend as his sidekicks, and the hilarious amount of careless destruction that they leave in their wake.
Overall, I enjoyed the writing for what it was. It was engaging and the storyline was not off-putting. The characters were nicely portrayed with what I was given. From the extensive list of sources Rollins is one who does his research on the history aspect of it which I can appreciate.
