Good evening! I just finished this moments ago and wanted to share with ya’ll The Pit. I had no idea how old this book was until I googled it after reading; the copy I had has little description of the content let alone any context as to when it was written, or any information on the author. Oh, well.
To describe the plot terribly, because I do not like to spoil, sends us to I believe 1800s Chicago where a chick named Laura starts out as a huge flirt with three different men until everyone around her makes her get serious; upon that fall to peer pressure she spends the rest of her time being married with the constant feeling of abandonment.
I would like to quickly acknowledge that the world, or atmosphere, of this read is something that is not in my comfort area in terms of personal subject interest. The first fifteen pages bored the hell out of me and seemed to just drawl on and on and on about little details that do not seem to further the story. Once Laura met Jadwin the ball began to roll quicker and the mundane descriptions seemed to drop out. Maybe Norris had to warm up to writing this, I do not know. As a whole, The Pit struck me on a personal level; Laura shares a little of the same personality as I do, although I hope I am not as dramatic as she is. The experience of dating someone, getting married, and having that feeling of not being cared for by the person you wanted the care from most… yeah… That season for me is coming to close, thankfully.
Anyways, I enjoyed the ensemble of characters; none of them were wasted.
I will also say that this was a lesson for me that getting involved in the stocks like in The Pit sounds horrible and I am glad that it never was my cup of tea, ha-ha. If you are, I salute you. To see the victories and the failings of precarious monetary decisions being read in different mindsets was a drama in itself.
I think this was a one-time read, as good as this read turned out to be. I would recommend it as something to try for those looking for variety. If you are interested at all, you will be able to find The Pit here.
