This was a wonderful read, even without knowledge of the movie; I think I would have rather picked the book over it.
I love the tragic story of it all, especially if you were to read and relate to what is happening in the world now. At this time it would have been completely politically incorrect to make a man with a [Spoiler] tragic past and scarred face be not just a phantom, or monster, but not end up with the lead. I feel for him, and Raoul being an asshole did not make it any better. I feel like I actually vouched for the phantom half of the time out of spite for Raoul.
Did anyone notice how Leroux made Christine into kind of a whimsical child who has no idea what drama she’s causing?? I do not think she realizes what love is really. I feel like she just goes with the flow and appears empty headed.
I would definitely read this again, especially if I did a book club about it. It would be interesting to see what everyone’s thought about it is concerning how different cultures are between here in modern US vs early 1900s Paris.
If you would like to check out this tragic classic, and possibly create a discussion on it, you can find it here.
