You may have heard of the movie version [I thought it blew], so the book will be pretty familiar [??]. I read this out loud with my husband and he also said this was a good book as well.
I enjoyed it. It was humorous, dramatic, pretty realistic, and well written. it had a decent flow to it so you were never lost in all the things happening to Chiyo/Sayuri. I never would have thought that the ending would have turned out the way it did because everything was suspenseful and the view was so exclusive that you are just as lost and unknowing as she was. That is a great kind of writing.
My husband wanted me to see the movie after we finished the book because I had never seen it before. After seeing it, we would take the book in a heartbeat. The movie cut out so much stuff and details were muddled together. It seemed like the older Chiyo got, the more sped up the movie became, so obviously we were especially disappointed in the second half of the movie.
