This was an interesting read. This is another book where my ability to understand language was lacking, where if I read this now instead of one, or two years ago, this would be a different review, or my memory has simply betrayed me again. Which, honestly, can probably be said of any book we read.
My heart went to the Chief immediately because of his story and his character. It is always the quiet ones who have the best stories, even if half the time they are about other people rather than themselves, but it is told in an entertaining way.
As I was reading, I loved this adult non-traditional story of man vs machine, or the establishment. Normally, you would think that this kind of story belongs in a different setting, but this is perfect otherwise. This also creates great discussion for the topic as well being that it is in a hospital where routine and regulation is king. Clearly the fight for king was the thing.
I am on the boat with McMurphy where he wanted to bring life back into the place because it felt so sterile and bland. There could have been compromise, especially if this took place in a current time rather than the 70s [??] and with what we know now of mental health.
This reminds me of the rehab arc of House where he tries to do the same thing of bringing too much life to the party called a rehab center. If ya’ll have not seen that arc, or even House, then I do not even know what else to say.
I would read this again especially with the knowledge that I know now.
If you would like to begin discussion for this pretty good read, the book is available here.
