I am copy/pasting the following from my Tumblr that I will be deleting once the reviews are transferred here.
“To describe it terribly, basically Voldemort is a tour guide in the desert for a group of people that includes a married couple of which he becomes the other guy with. To describe it well, a man and woman fall in extramarital love, which becomes the story for a man who is being taken care of during the Second World War by a woman who has yet to experience real love.”
If you have not read the book, I would highly recommend it; if you have not seen the movie, I would highly recommend it. I saw the movie first and it was done so well that I wanted to read the book. Ondaatje has a way of writing that sweeps you off your feet with Kip in the monastery. Such a romantic way to talk about love affairs vs ethics. Everyone had a purpose and did well in that purpose. There are great lessons to learn from reading and serves as a good reminder to love when you can, while you can.
I would read this again, and I cannot wait to read more of Ondaatje’s books.
You can find The English Patient as well as other books here.
