Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival

As I was reading, I found it a struggle to get through some days; other days it was fast pacing and enriching. I do not know if it was just me, or if it was just lulls in the book itself. It was an easy read and well to follow.

Part of me wants to like it, but as I am thinking about it, because when I had finished reading it at the beginning of the year, I felt let down. I understand that you are staying true to fiction, but it was like there was not enough drama between Kate and Mrs. Lincoln. That is what the title and description led to believe, but it ended being this historical novel that was more biographically about Kate and her life, which I get.

I will say that the people in that day could be just as petty and just as savage as we are. I also do not understand her choice in husband; seriously, if she had all these other choices and she based her decision on the in-the-moment feeling, knowing full well that he had habits that were very unattractive to her, then I do not know if I would have a whole lot of sympathy for how her marriage became. If she had as much pull and popularity about her, I feel like she could have definitely gotten out of the engagement, or immediately after marriage, unscathed by high society. That is just me, though.

I am not sure I would read this again; I am leaning toward no, personally. This set up for a book is becoming less of my cup of tea. Nonetheless, I would recommend it for anyone else to read if a Civil War era setting is theirs. You’ll be able to find it here.
